Planning Policy Officer
A Local Authority is seeking an experienced Planning Policy Officer to support the delivery and implementation of its Local Plan on an initial 3-month contract.
This role will suit a planning professional with strong policy experience within a Local Authority environment and a solid understanding of planning legislation, Local Plans, and development management processes.
Working arrangements are ideally 2 days per week in the office (Tuesday and Thursday), although flexibility can be considered for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the preparation, review, and implementation of Local Plan documents, Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs), and related planning policy work
Support the delivery of planning policy projects including evidence gathering, monitoring, and reporting
Provide planning policy advice and guidance to colleagues, stakeholders, and the public
Prepare reports, policy documents, consultation responses, and supporting evidence
Appraise development proposals against Local Plan policies, Government guidance, and planning considerations
Support examinations, hearings, inquiries, and committee reporting where required
Maintain and analyse planning performance and monitoring data using GIS and digital systems
Work collaboratively with internal departments, external partners, and regional stakeholders to support strategic planning objectives
Requirements
Previous experience working within a Local Authority planning policy team is essential
Strong knowledge of Local Plans, planning legislation, and policy development
Experience preparing planning policy documents and supporting evidence
Ability to manage workloads independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Excellent written communication and report writing skills
Experience using GIS systems and planning-related databases is desirable
MRTPI qualification or working towards accreditation is desirable
