Associate Director - Architecture - Industrial Sector
An established, global architecture and design practice is looking to appoint an Associate Director to join its London studio. This is a senior leadership role within a collaborative, design-led environment, working on high-profile retail projects and shaping both project delivery and team performance. The practice is known for delivering thoughtful, well-crafted architecture at every scale, from strategic masterplans through to detailed building design. The Role
This position will take ownership of a major client account within the big-box retail sector, leading projects across all stages from concept through to delivery. Working closely with a Director, the Associate Director will oversee project teams, drive design and technical excellence, and ensure successful outcomes across programme, budget, and quality. There is also a strong emphasis on digital innovation, with the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated Digital Lead to improve workflows, introduce automation, and enhance overall project efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the main point of contact for a key retail client, building and strengthening long-term relationships
- Lead multidisciplinary project teams from inception through to completion
- Take full responsibility for project delivery, including programme, fees, scope and profitability
- Manage and mentor architects and wider team members, contributing to a positive studio culture
- Oversee consultant coordination and ensure high-quality technical delivery
- Drive improvements in project efficiency through the use of digital tools and automation
- Report into senior leadership on project performance and resourcing
Requirements
- Proven experience leading large-scale retail or similar commercial projects, ideally within a Design & Build environment
- Strong client-facing skills and the ability to manage key accounts independently
- Confident team leader with experience managing project scope and change processes
- Highly proficient in Revit, digital tools, AI and workflow optimisation
- Experience coordinating consultants and delivering complex projects
- Organised, proactive and adaptable, with a positive approach to leadership
- Qualified Architect with a recognised degree
- Excellent written and spoken English
