Associate Director - Architecture - Industrial Sector

An established, global architecture and design practice is looking to appoint an Associate Director to join its London studio. This is a senior leadership role within a collaborative, design-led environment, working on high-profile retail projects and shaping both project delivery and team performance. The practice is known for delivering thoughtful, well-crafted architecture at every scale, from strategic masterplans through to detailed building design. With an employee-owned structure, there is a genuine sense of collective responsibility, strong culture, and long-term investment in its people.

The Role

This position will take ownership of a major client account within the big-box retail sector, leading projects across all stages from concept through to delivery. Working closely with a Director, the Associate Director will oversee project teams, drive design and technical excellence, and ensure successful outcomes across programme, budget, and quality. There is also a strong emphasis on digital innovation, with the opportunity to work alongside a dedicated Digital Lead to improve workflows, introduce automation, and enhance overall project efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the main point of contact for a key retail client, building and strengthening long-term relationships
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams from inception through to completion
  • Take full responsibility for project delivery, including programme, fees, scope and profitability
  • Manage and mentor architects and wider team members, contributing to a positive studio culture
  • Oversee consultant coordination and ensure high-quality technical delivery
  • Drive improvements in project efficiency through the use of digital tools and automation
  • Report into senior leadership on project performance and resourcing

Requirements

  • Proven experience leading large-scale retail or similar commercial projects, ideally within a Design & Build environment
  • Strong client-facing skills and the ability to manage key accounts independently
  • Confident team leader with experience managing project scope and change processes
  • Highly proficient in Revit, digital tools, AI and workflow optimisation
  • Experience coordinating consultants and delivering complex projects
  • Organised, proactive and adaptable, with a positive approach to leadership
  • Qualified Architect with a recognised degree
  • Excellent written and spoken English

What’s on Offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Employee-owned structure with bonus
  • Private healthcare
  • Hybrid working
  • Ongoing training and development
  • A genuinely supportive and inclusive studio culture

If you’re looking to step into a strategic leadership role where you can shape both projects and people, this is a brilliant opportunity to do so. Apply today or get in touch for a confidential conversation to find out more.
